Abstract
The two forces that author had felt keenly as a child and young adult growing up in Malaysia were those of Western colonialism and emergent Asian nationalism. The first gave the author, English language which equipped the author to study writers from countries not the author’s own, in this case, from the Philippines and Singapore. It has also inevitably shaped the author’s judgments, even the author’s choice of works to examine: hence the selection of English-language writers. The second still evolving phenomenon has influenced the author’s re visionary approach to literature, the author’s resistances to the author’s own colonialist childhood and education in Western social values and ideals of language achievement.
