Abstract
Effective Speech Communication is divided into five units. The chapters in Unit 1 will help you understand the communication process as a whole. As you study them, you will gain a better understanding of yourself as a communicator and of the ways you communicate With others.

Unit 2 will help you speak more effectively in public and be a better listener When someone else is speaking. You will find assistance in these chapters whether your reason for speaking is to inform or persuade others or just to create common feeling within a group, and whether your reason for listening is to get information or to make a decision.

Unit 3 will help you become more effective when participating in group discussions. It also contains specific advice for participating in debates and in meetings that use parliamentary procedure. Much of the speaking that affects us is broadcast on radio or television.

Unit 4 will offer you some introductory ideas about performing on these mass media and about being a critical radio listener and television viewer.

Finally, Unit 5 introduces you to the world of the performing arts: storytelling, oral interpretation, and dramatic performance.

Each Chapter in the book contains one or more lessons, each of which focuses on a specific topic. Each lesson begins with a short introduction that is followed by five main parts.
