Abstract
Increased public awareness of the importance of physical activity for optimal health and well-being has led to an increased need for more information and materials in this area. Nutrition and physical fitness are inseparable and constitute the physical component of total wellness. Wellness, a term that has gained popularity, essentially refers to optimal health. It includes an enjoyable and positive approach to a lifestyle that promises a high level of well-being, a conscious commitment to growth and improvement in all areas of life.
This manual is intended as a guide/reference for nutrition and fitness professionals as we" as teachers at the college level. It has eight chapters: Introduction, Total Wellness, A Healthy Diet, Principles of Physical Fitness, Human Energy and Performance, Diet and Performance, Exercise/Physical Activity to Improve the Normal Functioning of the Body, Role of Exercise on Health Promotion, and Prevention and Management of Lifestyle Diseases. It contains exercises geared towards generating from students basic nutrition information such as food preferences and food intake. It also contains exercises such as determination of calorie content of food and determination of energy requirements wherein students can apply theories learned to everyday situations. Exercises on issues and controversies such as use of nutrition supplements, food labeling and nutrition misinformation are included to teach students how to critically think in assessing nutrition information and practice.
