Abstract
The Humanities is applied to a realm so vast as to embrace literature, drama, and the film; the visual and the decorative arts; music and dance. Introduction to the Humanities introduces the students to the different areas of the arts giving them a knowledge of the various subject areas it covers. The book will teach the arts to those who are familiar with it. It will serve not only as a practical classroom textbook in the Humanities but also as a helpful reference book for the student in art appreciation and related courses. The importance of the human being, his or her feelings and how he or she expresses those feelings, is emphasized. It will also enable the student to perceive what the artist intends to put into a particular creation. It is suggested, however, that students attend symphony concerts, operas, and recitals; that they go to art museums and theaters whenever available.

On the teacher’s part, education in the humanities means teaching how to use leisure productively. Leisure'offers an opportunity for personal self-fulfillment and creativity.

One needs to spend a part of his or her time immersed in the arts so that he or she will not experience any dull moments and therefore avoid loneliness or boredom.

The emphasis in this book is mostly on the arts in the Philippines. The inclusion of a number of foreign arts is indispensable because of their lasting significance and because we can learn much from them. The authors believe that familiarity with foreign arts not only provides aesthetic satisfaction but also increases understanding of contemporary trends.

The subject, being a composite of many areas of the arts, has been shared by three authors:

Dr. Sanchez wrote Chapter 1 General Overview of Humanities and the chapters on Music and Dance; she also made Chapter 6 which is about Organization in Architecture and gave contributions on the topics drama and literature. Dr. Abad’s contribution includes the chapters on visual arts - architecture, sculpture, and painting, while Dr. Jao’s part includes the topic on ”Presentation of the Art Subjects” and the chapters on Drama and Literature.
