Abstract
The changes in the field of management are so rapid that unless its student or its practitioner keeps up with the changes he is likely to find himself obsolete.
Of late, improvements in the science and art of management have been tremendous, to say the least, that it has become exceedingly difficult for the student, the teacher and the practicing manager to keep tab with all of them.
This book addresses itself to this difficulty by bringing together the important ideas and trends in management and the useful new management tools which are coming into favor in the more progressive organizations.
The book traces the development of management thought. It discusses the functions of management. It examines the latest thinking in organization, human relations and communication. It explains techniques Which have been developed to improve decision-making in management. It calls attention to the need to examine major ethical and social ramifications of management decisions in the light of commercial expediency. It analyzes major problems encountered when an organization extends its Operations into nations and societies other than that of the home office.
In short, this volume aims to equip the student and the manager with the fundamentals of management and the universalistic insights and the transferrable, value-neutral techniques required to manage successfully and responsibly the ever-changing work situation. To do so effectively, key areas have been organized under six major headings:
Part I : The Foundations of Management Thought Part II : The Management Functions
Part III : Decision-Making and Communicating Part IV : Man-Management Tools
Part V : The Social Responsibility of Managers
Part VI : Cross-Cultural Management
At the end of each chapter is & Study Guide designed to help the leader evaluate his understanding of the concepts covered in the chapter.
The book considers the needs of both students and instructors. The author brings the bits and pieces together in order to provide the student with a comprehensive and systematic synthesis of concepts and principles of management (theory) and their applications (practice). At the same time, he presents the'material in such a way as to provide a logical framework of which to teach.
An additional feature of this revised edition is the inclusion of a chapter on case analysis. This is added to generate greater interest in the management course and to relate principles and apply to situations likely to confront the manager in his day-today operations.
