Abstract
The idea of human rights implies a universal conception of what is right and what is human. But many if not most people in Our time do not believe there are any objective moral standards of what is human and what is right. This often means that whatever serves the political purpose of the human rights advocate is considered right or human. Human rights are thus denied in the very name of human rights.

This book seeks to address this diiiicult problem by chusing attention on the biblical and historical foundations of human rights and the international instruments for implementing them. The study discloses the curious fact that a theological reticence prevails among Christian intellectuals in discussing the theoretical basis of human rights. As a consequence, Christian leadership seems to have lost control of the human rights revolution in our time.

Any serious study of human rights raises sooner or later the question of the ultimate meaning of human life and human community. Since we do not know what principles will dominate humanity in the future, it is of crucial importance that we reassert the Christian foundation of human rights.
