Abstract
In the closing months of the International Year of the Child, New Day Publishers is proud and happy to present this book, CHILD PSYCHIATRY IN ASEAN COUNTRIES: A Book of Readings. This is a collection of papers delivered at the First ASEAN Workshop on Child and Adolescent Psychiatry held in Jakarta in 1977, some papers delivered at the World Psychiatry Congress held in Honolulu in 1977, and one paper specially written for this volume.

The Compilers-William M. Bolman, Professor of Child Psychiatry, and Thomas W. Maretzki, Professor of Anthropology and Psychiatry, both at the University of Hawaii-believe that this book of readings Will be useful for the increasing number of child psychiatrists in training and practice in Southeast Asian countries, as well as for others in the child welfare professions. All the contributors clearly emphasize that “child psychiatry has a distinct cultural base and therefore cannot blindly follow orthodox or eclectic Western theorists, educators, and practitioners.”
