Abstract
Research and training in the area of Learning Disabilities have been in progress at the Institute for Language Disorders for more than fifteen years. During this time a wide variety of children have been enrolled in our remediation program. Some had deficiencies in learning to read, some in learning to spell or in acquiring the written word. Many were aphasic or dyscalculic. Most had deficits affecting academic learning although some were deficient in social perception, in ability to tell time, in distinguishing between right and left, in orientation and direction. Others could not judge distance, size, and speed or learn to use maps-though otherwise there was no impairment of intellect.
This volume presents the frame of reference, the principles and practices, that we have evolved in working with these children. The emphasis is psychoneurological, entailing concepts from biomedical engineering, psychology, neurology, psychiatry, education, and language pathology. The purpose throughout is to outline an approach to remediation which we have designated Clinical Teaching.
We have intended that this volume fill a need as a textbook for courses aimed at training teachers, as well as other educators and specialists concerned with the intriguing problem of learning disabilities. Underlying this objective is the hope that the concepts and materials might be a contribution to better understanding of learning as a process and thereby enhance this vital experience for all children.
